A person can be exposed to triclosan via consumer products like soaps, hand sanitizers, toothpaste, and mouthwash and contaminated water.
One study found that women exposed to triclosan – a chemical widely used as an antibacterial in soaps, toothpaste, and other personal care products – are more likely to develop osteoporosis. Triclosan is an endocrine disrupting chemical that has been banned in recent years by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, is the first of its kind to study the link between triclosan exposure, bone mineral density, and osteoporosis.
A person may be exposed to triclosan through consumer products – such as soaps, hand sanitizers, toothpaste and mouthwashes – and contaminated water.
“Laboratory studies have shown that triclosan can have a negative effect on bone mineral density in cell lines or in animals,” said Yingjun Li, from the School of Public Health of Hangzhou Medical College in China.
“However, little is known about the relationship between triclosan and the health of human bones,” said Li. The researchers analyzed data from 1,848 women to determine the link between triclosan and bone health. They found that women with higher triclosan levels in their urine were more likely to have bone problems.
